Apart from the well known specialist tuners out there for our vehicles I will be in need of a full replacement set - front discs, rear discs and brake pads by the time I get around to fitting them in the New Year.
Tinker may know someone, i recall seeing loads of ap discs at his garage but i dont know if they will fit Could you get hi-spec discs? Dealers that have been supplying them are basically getting them in gaps in the production run for HSV own use.
Doubt whichever supplier you go to you'll see much of a price difference on original AP branded parts. BG Developments is one option for sure they made my front brakes Rears are more tricky as the disc is a 1 piece item. If there are licensing issues with the design, only certain places might be allowed to sell them.
Woody vt 1, posts months. Thats only the case with the rears Bob. For replacements, the rears are a one-piece design and car specific. Pads should be a doddle.
HSV Tom control s the mounting kits for the calipers which is the biggest issue for kits but obviously isn't a problem for renewing consumables. I'd consider having bells made for the rears to accommodate a smaller bolted rotor to save in future.
Edited by Woody vt on Wednesday 10th November I'd consider having bells made to accommodate a smaller bolted rotor to save in future. The issue with 2 piece rears is a surface for the handbrake to operate on. Alloy is not a sensible material for this, although I have seen some cheap kits use it. It really doesnt last long though!! I think if you werent stupid about putting the handbrake on, it could last a very long time. But it seems most people have this strange notion in their head that they have to apply the handbrake, before they have actually stopped.
I guess a steel bell is a possibility though. Trying to do an alloy one with steel or other suitable insert will be very expensive. I have been asked for these in the past and rotors and pads are not a problem, but the bells are licenced to HSV. So bells can only come from Walkingshaw and autherised agents eg Monkfish.
I have contacted BG Developments - they do not have the part numbers for the discs on this particular fitment - they need to know the discs dimensions - front and rear - does anyone know what these are exactly? As I already have the AP Racing setup and am just replacing some worn out discs and pads - I should be able to re-use the bells on the existing front discs on the new front discs right?
And from the posts above, am I right in thinking that the rear discs do not have removeable bells - so cannot re-use these - a one piece assembly? I have just changed my front AP brakes.
The rotors are available as a balanced assembly, they just need fitting to the original bells. The worst part of the job was cleaning all of the surfaces and clocking the disc for run-out.
I just took my time to get it right and make sure no problems are lurking ready to suprise me in the future. I bought the rotors and pads my nearest AP outlet, Ray West, Thruxton circuit, Andover as it's only a couple of miles from me.
If you email me tonight when I am at home I can give you part numbers etc.Your brakes can only stop as fast as your front tires allow. Nothing is failure proof, but there is not another S brake system that can take as much abuse while significantly reducing unsprung and rotational weight.
Even with high temp brake pads and thick rotors, it is still easy to fade brakes by passing heat through the caliper pistons and into the brake fluid causing it to boil. Additionally, the CP has a 4 lb. Without anit-knockback springs, you will have to double tap your brakes to remount the pad on the rotor.
Imagine having to double tap at the limit of your braking zone! Lets get this out of the way up front; yes these rotors are only mm, the same diameter as OEM. If you are really worried that this is not a BIG brake kit, these are the same rotors that are used on late model oval cars with HP, weigh lbs and slam on their brakes every few seconds around short tracks.
The higher vane count moves more air and provides more surface area to transfer heat from. Despite their smaller diameter, the design of the CP provides better heat dissipation than larger heavier rotors. Also, the AP Racing CP rotors are mounted on a full floating hat, allowing thermal expansion reducing stress that causes warping and cracks, leading to rotor failure. Just like every dynamic part on the car, not all materials are the same and they do make a difference.
Finally, the patented AP Racing J Hook pattern on the rotors amplifies pad feel by maximizing leading edges and distributes surface heat better than straight slots or drilled holes. Each caliper weighs 4.
The rotors with custom floating hats weigh 13 lbs vs The combined 14 lbs of total weight reduction is a significant and will improve both handling and acceleration. Another reason we chose a rotor size of mm over a mm rotor is the weight savings of up to 5lbs per rotor.
Again, unessarily heavier rotors can add significant rotatoinal and unsprung weight reducing acceleratoin, suspension dynamics and increase effective mass increasing stoping distances. Two common problems that keep Ss in the pits and off the track are cracked rotors and changing pads. The Essex Bespoke brake kit address this by using AP Racing CP calipers that accept a 20mm pad in a common shape, providing more pad options and reducing costs.
Additionally, the thicker pads have more thermal capacity further reducing fade. Essex purchases the AP Racing CP rotors in high volumes due to the number of professional racing series that use them. If you factor in frequent 1-piece rotor replacements or expensive 2-piece rotor replacements, thin brake pads, lost track time due to changing cracked rotors, worn pads or simply waiting for your brakes to cool in the pits, the Essex Bespoke brake kit could pay for itself in a relatively short amount of time.
This slightly reduces ABS engagement, which is a good thing on the track but it is still available if you lock up in adverse conditions. These are not the same AP racing calipers used in other AP racing kits. The CP caliper has some other track focused features that other calipers are missing. Oddly, other caliper pistons are aluminum, which has high thermal conductivity transferring heat from the back of the pad directly into the brake fluid.
The CP caliper uses steel pistons, which are 15X less thermally conductive than aluminum. Knockback occurs during heavy cornering that can cause the pistons to recess into the caliper, upon the next braking application you perceive a lack of brakes.
This is simply corrected by tapping the brakes again, but imaging thinking about that while racing on the track.A higher quality rotor replacement that not only performs better then stock but also costs a lot less.
Many have seen excessive cracking and premature wear. Essex has worked with AP Racing to come up with an alternative that offers both superior performance and tremendous value. Essex is offering a direct replacement iron disc that will bolt onto the OE aluminum rotor hat. Primary discs benefits:. Please note:.

Currently used in professional motorsport venues such as NASCAR, the J-Hook groove pattern is designed to provide outstanding bite for the pads, while promoting even heating and cooling of the disc face. The results are minimal distortion, constant pad contact, and less pad deposition, vibration and judder.
Substantially less expensive than OEM components. Please note: Price is for a set of rear replacement rotors with attachment kit. You must re-use the factory rotor hats. Attachment kits can be re-used if you already have the AP racing brake disks.

AP Racing Front J-Hook Replacement Rotors (2012+ R35 GT-R) [NIS3920AJ]
Wow, are they beautiful, true works of art. They are also cheaper than the OEM ones. Just changed them today and the swap was easy well except for having to remove and reinstall the parking brake caliper - that's a pain. The RB rotors come with a black hat and black finish on the rotor surface.
I don't think the black on the rotor will last but boy does it look cool when new. The rotor hats mount to the disk with a center mount design not to the surface like the OEM ones. This should help with cooling as there are openings in the center. They also have holes cast into the slots on the disk.
This should also help with gas venting. Now all I have to do is find a lonely road where I can bed my race pads in. I'm also one of the original 's. By the way, here are a couple of pictures.
